The Cyprus Third Age Observatory, continuing its commitment to engage in open dialogue with candidates for the upcoming local government elections, recently met with Marios Shiakallis, the candidate for Deputy Mayor of Episkopi.
During this meeting, the Observatory responded to Mr Siakalli's call to address the needs and problems of older people in Episkopi, focusing on healthy ageing initiatives. The President of the Observatory, Mr Demos Antoniou, outlined the organization's current activities and proposed expanding these efforts within the new Municipality of West Limassol, based in Episkopi. He emphasized local governments' crucial role in activating and involving older people through scientifically backed programs and best practices across Europe. Mr Antoniou also briefed Mr Siakallis on the European programs Mentoring Across Borders and Remcread, in which the Observatory is a partner, and stressed the need for close cooperation between the Municipality of West Limassol and the organization to implement actions for older adults.
Mr Siakallis shared his ideas and practical proposals for promoting active and dignified ageing in Episkopi. He invited the Observatory to present its initiatives and prevention programs, particularly those of the "Memory and Creative Expression Centre," at a special meeting to inform Episkopi residents about these scientific programs. These programs include cognitive strengthening exercises, specialized gymnastics for older people, music therapy, dance therapy, open discussions and lectures, recreational activities, and social integration efforts. Mr Antoniou accepted the invitation to present with great enthusiasm.
This discussion underscores the importance of cooperation between NGOs and local governments in developing strategies to promote the inclusion and active participation of older people in society.
