October 1, established by the United Nations as the International Day of Older Persons, is a day dedicated to recognising the invaluable contribution of older people and to highlighting the challenges they continue to face at the social and institutional level.

Older people are a cornerstone of society. Through their struggles, sacrifices, and wisdom, they have shaped the present and continue to support families, pass on values to younger generations, and strengthen social cohesion. Nevertheless, many experience marginalisation, social isolation, and limited access to health and care services.

The Cyprus Third Age Observatory emphasises that today serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to respect, protect, and uphold the rights and dignity of older persons. The Observatory continues to promote actions that foster active ageing, social participation, and quality of life, in complete alignment with European standards and international best practices.

Its vision is the creation of a society in which older people live safely, actively, and as equals, free from all forms of violence, abuse, or discrimination. The International Day of Older Persons is not merely a day of tribute, but a reminder of responsibility for the State, institutions, and citizens, so that older people continue to be active and valuable members of society.
