The Cyprus Third Age Observatory, committed to fostering open dialogue with candidates in the upcoming local government elections, recently met with Vassilis Demetriades, a candidate for the Presidency of the Limassol District Local Government Organisation.
The discussion was centered on the issues and prospects of the elderly population, revealing a rich and multi-faceted conversation. Mr. Demetriades attentively engaged with the Observatory's proposals, which focused on enhancing elderly engagement and developing elderly-friendly cities through specific initiatives and programs. Demos Antoniou, President of the Observatory, also briefed Mr. Demetriades on two significant European projects: Mentoring Across Borders and Remcread. These projects, where the Observatory is a key partner, aim to promote active, healthy, and dignified ageing and the social integration and education of refugee and migrant women.
In response, Mr. Demetriades shared his vision and strategies for facilitating active and dignified ageing, emphasizing the need to recognize the valuable contributions of older individuals to Cyprus's society and economy. He highlighted that the Limassol District Local Government Organization has the potential to implement targeted programs that foster the activation and socialization of older people. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of making Limassol a more age-friendly city.
This dialogue underscores the crucial role of collaboration and strategic planning in promoting the inclusion and active participation of older people in our communities.
