As part of an ongoing collaboration to promote the health and well-being of older adults in Cyprus, the Minister of Health and the Cyprus Third Age Observatory held a significant meeting to discuss key issues surrounding ageing and older people care. This meeting reinforced their commitment to enhancing the quality of life for older citizens nationwide.
The main focus was the National Strategy for the Health of Older People, which is ready for implementation and is part of the broader National Strategy for Older People developed by the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare. Initial actions are expected to launch soon, aiming to address the unique challenges of ageing in Cyprus effectively. During the meeting, the Minister of Health highlighted its recent successful campaign on polypharmacy, aimed at raising awareness about safe medication use among older adults.
The Third Age Observatory presented its achievements and key initiatives, notably the Memory Centre in Limassol. This Centre provides high-quality preventive health services based on scientific programs, contributing to early diagnosis and health promotion among older adults. The President of the Observatory, Mr. Demos Antoniou, remarked that the positive outcomes of these programs demonstrate the need for similar structures throughout Cyprus. Such initiatives would support the General Health System and enhance older persons' autonomy and quality of life.
Another important issue addressed was the inappropriate behaviour of a small group of medical and paramedical staff in nursing facilities, which remains a serious concern. The Observatory presented the Minister with its 2023 report on abuse and ageism, hoping that the findings in 2024 will reflect progress. Additionally, the need for greater education and awareness among medical and paramedical staff on issues related to ageing was emphasized, alongside the importance of developing a geriatrics speciality in Cyprus.
Minister of Health, Mr. Michael Damianos, stated, "It is essential to promptly begin implementing the actions outlined in the National Strategic Plan for the Health of Older People, ensuring the conditions that allow older citizens to live with health and dignity."
After congratulating Mr. Damianos on the Council of Ministers' recent approval of the Recovery and Rehabilitation Centres bill, the Observatory's President thanked him and the Ministry's Director General, Mrs. Yiannaki, for their unwavering support of Cyprus's older population. He stressed that the Observatory is the Ministry's steadfast and reliable partner in advancing initiatives that promote healthy and dignified ageing.
The Minister of Health and the Cyprus Third Age Observatory reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation. Through targeted actions and activities, they aim to build a modern health system that ensures comprehensive support and care for Cyprus's older citizens.
