The Cyprus Third Age Observatory held a very constructive meeting with the Member of the Parliament Mrs Alexandra Attalidou on 5 December 2024.
The meeting focused on critical issues concerning the ageing of the population, the need to promote intergenerational cooperation through mentoring of young people by older people, the strengthening of independent assisted living, the protection of the rights of older people, as well as ensuring their active participation in society.
Mrs Attalidou stressed the importance of formulating targeted policies to guarantee the quality of life of older people, while at the same time referring to the urgent need to adapt social structures to the new demographic and social challenges. Such initiatives highlight the importance of cooperation between institutions and state structures to build a society that respects and supports all age groups.
Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening the activation of older people so that they remain active members of society and the local economy. Proposals were discussed to promote actions aimed at the social inclusion of older people, such as strengthening their participation in voluntary and cultural activities, and making use of their experience and wisdom by mentoring younger generations and businesses. In addition, initiatives to facilitate the maintenance of older people's autonomy through technological solutions and support services have been considered.
The President of the Observatory, Demos Antoniou, elaborated on the activities of the organisation and in particular the need to create Memory and Prevention Centres throughout Cyprus, following the model of the centre operating in Limassol, which is recognised as a good practice for many European countries. Mr. Antoniou also elaborated on AGE Platform Europe's positions on "A Europe for ALL Ages" as well as the European programmes Mentoring Across Border and Remcread.
The Cyprus Third Age Observatory is committed to continue the dialogue with stakeholders and politicians in order to ensure that the voices of older people are taken into account in the design and formulation of policies. This meeting is an important step towards creating a sustainable model of social support for older people in Cyprus.
