Festive season and elderly

More than one million older people will spend Christmas alone in England this year, according to the figures from Age UK. This reality is found in other European countries as well as in Cyprus. For most people, Christmas and New Year create positive emotions and are a source of joy and happiness. But for many Seniors, these festive days cause intense feelings of isolation and loneliness, especially for those who live alone, do not have a supportive environment, are in a nursing home, or face serious health problems.

Statistical surveys indicate that, especially at Christmas, the elderly feel lonelier than on other days and that 80% of these people spend that particular day watching television, trying to have fun with the joy of others.

The Cyprus Third Age Observatory calls on everyone to care for seniors and find ways to stay connected with them, especially during the festive season. Communicate with them regularly and reserve a place at the holiday table for them, whether a relative, a friend or even an elderly neighbor who will be spending the holidays alone. The Cyprus Third Age Observatory is running a campaign so the elderly can enjoy the holidays with the motto "NOONE LEFT ALONE."
