CTAO at the AGM of AGE Platform Europe

The Cyprus Third Age Observatory participated in the annual general assembly of AGE Platform Europe, held in Leuven, Belgium, between 10 and 12 June 2024.

During the meeting, the organisation's future steps and the policies to be prioritised in relation to active, healthy, and dignified ageing were decided. AGE Platform Europe is the European Union's official interlocutor on older people's issues and the main policy-making organisation for older people in Europe.

After the general assembly, the organisation's annual conference was held, and critical issues were discussed, mainly concerning ageism, European strategies for age equality, and proposals for the future of older people in the European environment. The conference was attended and addressed by leading speakers such as the Polish Minister of Policy for Older People, Mrs Marzena Okla-Drewnowicz, the Director of the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights, Mrs Sirpa Rautio, the Regional Representative for Europe to the United Nations Human Rights Office Mrs Elena Kountouri, the President of the European Network of Equality Bodies Mr Patrick Charlier, the President of the European Commission for Social Rights Ms Aoife Nolan and other international experts.

The Observatory was represented by its President, Mr Demos Antoniou, who raised the main issues faced by older people in Cyprus. Mr Antoniou also had the opportunity to exchange views with the Minister of Policy for Older People of Poland and discuss the need to align policies and future actions with the Cypriot government, which takes over the EU Presidency in 2026, immediately after Poland.
